Digital Badging
Adler Planetarium

Picture
As part of a collaborative effort across museums and youth organizations, we developed standards for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) digital badges. Work continues on exploring best practices for integrating badges.

Museum Public Programming
California Science Center

Picture
The range of demonstrations developed for museum audiences includes large-scale shows, such as a dive and chemistry show, that incorporated central messaging and direct audience participation.

Curriculum Development
California Science Center

Picture
Developed specifically for the Big Lab at the California Science Center, curriculum included ladybugs, erosion, roller coaster design, chemistry, and the power of air. Field trip programs included pre- and post-activities. View examples of pre- and post-activities for ladybugs and roller coasters.

Youth Program Development
Adler Planetarium

Picture
Adler youth programs include hack days, externships, and web-making workshops for youth from grades 6 to 12, all of which I lead or collaborate on designing, developing curriculum, implementing, and evaluating. View an example of a youth program, or take a look at some of the work created by Adler Teens.

After School Programming
Adler Planetarium

Picture
The Near Space Explorers after school curriculum has been implemented at four Chicago-area middle and high schools.  Modeled after existing game-based learning curriculum, I redesigned the material for an after school club setting and developed this accompanying website for students to access the lesson objectives.

Professional Development: Science Modeling
Adler Planetarium

Picture
This professional development session focused on the use of science modeling in the classroom, as well as student engagement techniques derived from user-center design methodology. View the Prezi presentation for a walk through of an example session.

Museum Evaluation
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary / Stanford Univ.

Picture
The evaluation project for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary included affective measures and content assessment. View the project page for more information.

Research: Documenting Interest
NatureBridge / Stanford University

Picture
The evaluation research with NatureBridge was headed by Dr. Nicole Ardoin from Stanford University. We developed metrics for measuring interest using student-generated digital photography during the outdoor education experience. Publication of the research methods is pending. Learn more about NatureBridge here.

Digital Learning Experiences
Master Degree Project, Stanford University

Picture
KaiPals is an interactive, at-home scavenger hunt designed for preschool through elementary-aged children. While playing the game, children learn about marine mammals through self-contained videos. View the project page for more information.

App Design: Pirate Physics
Stanford University, Child Development Project

Picture
Pirate Physics teaches upper elementary students basic knowledge about simple machines in a fun and engaging way. Designed with user-centered principles, the development of the app structure consisted of working directly with children. View the project page for more information.
